The
Seasons of Wheat
These
paintings, done over the years, record stages of the wheat
crops.
In
the autumn, after the first rains and/or irrigation, the little sprouts
come
up, transforming the dry beige land into green which will
become
lush as the crop develops. By May, the green has
become
a golden yellow, to be harvested by the
combines.
Then the straw is raked, baled
and
eventually collected. All that is
left
is the stubble until the field will
be
ploughed in preparation
for
the next crop......

After The Combine, 1992, oil on canvas, 66 x 108 cm., 26" x 42"
This painting was done in the field at the outset of the wheat harvest in June 1992. The combine (wheat harvester), had cut a swath in the field and then gone on to another field. I came back the scene the next day to continue working, only to find that the combine had returned and harvested the rest of the field, thus determining that the painting was finished!
